Local History Makers Series - February 9, 2008, 3:00pm Against the Odds: Writers Growing up Black in Kansas


Museum School: Object Lesson - Saturday, February 16, 10:00am The Watkins Museum, 1047 Massachusetts St., announces a new series of workshops: Museum School. In this series participants will learn about the inner workings of the museum and skills utilized by museum professionals. The workshops are open to the public, museum volunteers, and museum studies students.

In the first workshop, Object Lesson, participants will learn what happens to an object when it is donated to the museum. Please call 785-841-4109 to register for this free program. Donations will be accepted.


History Hour at the Watkins Museum: Celebrating Black History Month -- Saturday, February 23, 10:30 a.m.Families are invited to celebrate Black History Month at the Watkins Museum, 1047 Massachusetts St, at History Hour Saturday, February 23 at 10:30 a.m. Museum Educator, Lauren Kernes, will be reading D is for Drinking Gourd: An African American Alphabet, Hold the Flag High, and The Bus Ride that Changed History. She will also teach the children how to make Unity Hand Wreaths. Free and open to the public. Donations accepted.


"Friendship Quilts" - Wednesday, February 27, 11:00 a.m. Since the 1840s, women’s groups and friends have been making signature or friendship quilts. Join us at the Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Massachusetts, on February 27 at 11:00 a.m. to hear Ferrol Lattin, Textile Collector and Historian, discuss the history and meaning of these quilts. Ferrol will share the stories of friendship quilts from her own collection. Participants are also encouraged to bring their friendship quilts. This program accompanies an exhibit Quilts of the 1930s and 1940s currently on display at the museum through March 22. Free and open to the public. Donations accepted.


Behind the Scenes Tour of Watkins Museum - Thursday, February 28, at 7:30 p.m Are you fascinated by the architecture of the Watkins Bank Building? Would you like to see all of its nooks and crannies? Are you curious about museum work or the things that are not on display? Join a museum staff member for a Behind the Scenes Tour. The next monthly tour will be Thursday, February 28, at 7:30 p.m. The tour is free and open to the public. Space is limited. Call 785-841-4109 to make your reservation
