Mission
The Watkins Community Museum will be an outstanding regional museum/archive in Douglas County
Objectives contributing to the Mission:
I. Internal Quality
Maintain professional standards in all matters of operation.
A.
Continue to monitor exterior building maintenance needs and shifting of
the
structure.
B. Adopt a master plan for museum space, office space and storage space.
A. Continually monitor and update the Emergency/Disaster plan.
B. Train staff members and volunteers in emergency response.
C. Improve security at the boiler room back door.
A. Expand usage of our scanning and Internet capabilities.
B. Develop a web page specific to our museum.
C. Link with other organizations and businesses for our mutual benefit.
A. Maintain an environment protective of the collection.
B. Address backlog of artifact care needs.
C. Computerize the catalog records.
D. Review and update collections acquisition policy.
II. Out Reach
A.
Improve and develop a variety and options in education programming for
children
and adults.
B. Expand our educational audience.
C. Develop a well organized Docent program
D. Improve and install an interactive exhibit
A. Display temporary exhibits on a scheduled basis
B. Develop an appropriate exhibit for the sesquicentennial
C. Develop a gallery plan.
A. Develop a web site.

Publicize the Watkins Community Museum of History to a national audience
through
the web
C. Increase exposure through
an alliance with the Lawrence Convention and
Visitors Bureau, State Tourism
Office and Territorial Kansas Heritage Alliance.

A. Expand membership base (individual and business)

C. Expand multi-cultural interests in the museum.

Connect with historical neighborhood organizations and the Lawrence

A. Revitalize the "Friends of the Museum" organization.
B. Expand the volunteer base.

A. Adopt a master plan for museum space, office space and storage space.
B. Study the possibility of obtaining a building
for large equipment storage and
maintenance.
C. Improve toilet facilities.
D. Install
a kitchen/lounge to facilitate use by outside groups and as a
convenience
to our staff.
Continually monitor and update the Emergency/Disaster plan.
A. Continue to expand usage of our scanning and Internet capabilities.
B. Collections Management
C. Set aside an acquisition fund.
II. Out Reach
Develop a well-organized Docent program
A. Follow a gallery plan.

Continually update existing permanent exhibits and increase interpretive
labeling, both audio and visual.
