It Happened on Mass Street:
150 Years in Lawrence

Third Floor, JB Watkins Gallery

Since the early days of Lawrence, events that shaped Kansas history have taken place on Mass Street and the people that built our community have walked its sidewalks.

In the 150 years following Kansas Statehood, Massachusetts Street’s role has evolved—reflecting the times, both good and bad, and responding to the needs of the community.  Over the years, Mass Street has been central to the developing commercial, business, and entertainment life of Lawrence.  And its role continues to change.  This exhibition explores the places and uncovers the stories that have shaped our downtown, creating the familiar place we know today.  From daily commerce to big business to fun nights on the town—it all happened on Mass Street.
