Museum Staff

Steve Nowak
Executive Director
Steve joined the staff at the Watkins Museum in February, 2011. He has had a twenty-five year career in museum work, with experience in collections management, exhibition development, public programming, and education. His background is in American art, history, and material culture. In addition to his management responsibilities, Steve looks forward to developing public programs, increasing Museum involvement with schools and teachers, and working with members of the Douglas County Historical Society.

John Jewell
Business Manager
John taught fifth and sixth grade in the Lawrence public school system for thirty years and served as the photographer for the Watkins Community Museum of History for fifteen years. Since retiring from teaching ten years ago, he has continued to work at the museum as administrative assistant and business manager. His additional responsibilities include leading local history tours and providing historical information to groups of children.

Brittany Keegan
Curator — Collections Manager
Brittany holds a B.A. in American History and an M.A. in Museum Studies both from the University of Kansas. She has been working with the Watkins Community Museum of History collections and exhibits in various capacities since 2007. In addition to managing the collections, Brittany coordinates volunteers and maintains the Museum’s research resources.

Abby Pierron
Education and Programs Coordinator
Abby has been working as a museum educator since 2006. She holds a B.A. in American Studies from Coe College, and a M.A. in Museum Studies from the University of Kansas. Her background is in American and Kansas history and learning theory. At the Watkins, Abby develops new programming for both the general public and school groups.
