We have a sort of permanent exhibit of this store. This store was a grocery store from the 1880's that was out on the 1800 block of Massachusetts. We've had it function as a grocery store, but currently it is a dentist's office. It features Lucy Hobbs Taylor, the first woman dentist in the United States, who served Lawrence for 35 years beginning in 1867. It shows some of the tools of the trade. We have a sign up here that was done by Tom Swearingen that says, "Woman Who Pulls Teeth."Teeth pulling in olden days was a little like dehorning - it was a physical job. The idea of a woman doing something that physically demanding got their attention, so that's why they said the "Woman Who Pulls Teeth." |
