As we come into the stairwell we find the surrey with the fringe on the top. Mrs. Wilma Miller hired a local craftsman Carl Reuter and he spent hundreds of hours restoring this carriage. I always say "One man's junk is another man's treasure." And when you look at pictures of the carriage before restoration you see that Mr. Reuter had a long ways to go to restoration. We believe the carriage was originally built by a Jewish firm because on parts you see the Star of David on the footsteps. It was built by the Columbus Buggy Company of Columbus, Ohio about 1900. It's original owner was Lulu McCombs of the famous Kansas City lumber company family. |
