Honk for Change: Local Activism Shapes a Community

| Second Floor

Thomas Trower, associated with his “Honk for Hemp” sign, exemplifies Lawrence’s culture of activism. Trower supported the legalization of hemp and marijuana products and advocated for their many benefits. Trower’s personal mission to spread awareness and advocate for hemp was supported by the community for over three decades, but he was not the only one. Thomas Trower is a singular example of the determination and passion that is required of all grassroots activism.

In this exhibition, Thomas Trower’s story is an entry point to an exploration of the actively engaged community that defines Lawrence, the counterculture and activism that has thrived here since the mid-20th century, and an overview of the legal aspects of hemp and marijuana. Trower’s story demonstrates how decisions made and actions taken by ordinary people shape the future of our community, how ordinary people make history, and that national issues are actively playing out in Lawrence.
