The Origin of Oak Hill Cemetery

In 1864, the mayor of Lawrence advocated for a new cemetery to be built to memorialize the victims of Quantrill’s Raid. The result was Oak Hill Cemetery. In this episode learn about the history of Oak Hill Cemetery, the rural cemetery movement of the mid-1800s, and how community members are preserviting the cemetery’s history today.

Time Capsule with KLWN’s Joel Becker and the Watkins Museum’s Natalie Vondrak explores the history of Lawrence or Douglas County and shares the stories of the people and events that have helped shape our community. The show airs the first Tuesday of the month during Radio for Grownups around 10:10 AM on FM 101.7 or AM 1320 KLWN.
