Lawrence 1867: Through the Eyes of Famed Photographer Alexander Gardner

8/20 @ 10:00 am 11:30 pm

Our annual memorial service for the victims of Quantrill’s Raid will be followed by a new addition to our programming. Historian and photographer John Charlton and Will Haynes of the Watkins Museum will speak on the life of famous photographer Alexander Gardner, his 1867 trip to document the progress of the Kansas Pacific Railway, and Charlton’s project photographing the same route 130 years later. Gardner’s photographs of Lawrence–displayed as large prints in the Watkins Museum–capture an extraordinary time of recovery and growth for the city, and you’ll learn about it all in this unique event. Part of Civil War on the Border, Douglas County’s largest annual heritage festival. Saturday, August 20, 10-11:30 AM CT
